Supporters of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), took to the streets of Port Harcourt to protest against the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), urging it to halt the ongoing local government elections in compliance with a recent Federal High Court ruling.
The protest, which saw a large turnout, was sparked by concerns from Wike’s camp over alleged irregularities in the electoral process. Demonstrators, holding placards with messages such as “Obey Court Order” and “No Justice, No Election,” expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the elections and demanded that RSIEC stop the polls and honor the court’s decision.
The protest follows a recent court judgment that reportedly ordered the suspension of the elections due to legal challenges. Despite this, RSIEC proceeded with the polls, sparking outrage among Wike’s supporters, who have since called for the election to be postponed until the legal issues are resolved.
This demonstration is part of the broader political tension surrounding the elections in Rivers State.
