The Lagos State Police Command has announced the arrest of two suspected hoodlums in connection with the death of a vigilante member in the Epe area. The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrests to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
According to Hundeyin, the Epe Police Division received a report on Monday around 4:30 p.m. that a member of the Ibile Vigilante group, identified only as Oluwafemi, 45, was attacked by suspected hoodlums on Friday at about 2:00 p.m. The attack occurred at a refuse dump site in Afero Village, Epe, where Oluwafemi attempted to prevent the hoodlums from scavenging contaminated frozen turkeys.
The attack left Oluwafemi with multiple injuries. He was initially rushed to Epe General Hospital, where he received treatment and was discharged. However, on July 15, 2024, his condition worsened, and he was readmitted to the hospital. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, he passed away. His body has since been taken to the mortuary.
SP Hundeyin also noted that, in addition to the two recent arrests, 12 other suspects had been handed over to the task force on Saturday for their involvement in scavenging the contaminated turkeys. The police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
