The killing of five soldiers on Wednesday at a checkpoint in Aba, Abia State, prompted the Military High Command to promise to apply tremendous military pressure on the banned Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). The military would respond to the attack with ferocity and see to it that the gang is completely defeated, according to a statement made on Friday in Abuja by Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations.

According to Buba, IPOB/ESN terrorists attacked and killed Operation UDO KA troops who were stationed at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in the Obingwa Local Government Area, close to Aba. He said that terrorists attacked the forces, who had been sent in to keep the calm and defend the populace, using three Prado Toyota SUVs with tinted windows and other people from the neighborhood. This resulted in a surprise attack on the checkpoint.
“The attack sadly took the lives of five personnel of the armed forces.
“The armed forces mourns these troops as each and every soldier lost in battle is a terrible loss.
“Meanwhile, investigation are ongoing concerning the attack.
“Overall, it must be reiterated that the lifeline of the terrorist is the people and this situation is no exemption.
“Winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible and the IPOB capitalised on this to perpetrate attacks on the troops.
“The situation leave more to be desired.
“Accordingly, it is absolutely imperative that the military retaliate against this dastardly act against troops.

“The military would be fierce in its response. We would bring overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat,” he said.
A larger initiative to stabilize the southeast of Nigeria, where there has been an upsurge in violent incidents linked to IPOB and ESN, included the start of Operation UDO KA. The operation’s goals are to eliminate the threats that these organizations pose and bring law and order back to the impacted communities. The recent assault on the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint highlights the difficulties the military faces in accomplishing these goals.
The war between the Nigerian government and separatist groups in the southeast has troublingly escalated, as seen by the murder of five soldiers at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint by IPOB/ESN militants. The military’s pledge to respond to the strike with overwhelming force demonstrates how seriously the administration takes this danger to national security. But more than just forceful means will be needed to end the conflict in a way that will last. The fundamental problems of marginalization and disenfranchisement that drive the call for Biafran independence must be addressed. A comprehensive approach to create long-term peace and stability in the region must include political discourse, economic development, and measures to foster confidence between the government and impacted people.
The decisions made in the upcoming weeks and months will have a significant impact on how the conflict develops in the future as Nigeria negotiates this difficult and complicated scenario. It is essential that all parties involved collaborate to find a solution that advances equity, harmony, and peace for all Nigerians.
