Senate President Godswill Akpabio has advised Nigerians to take advantage of any opportunity to eat free food, acknowledging the financial strain many citizens are facing.
In a lighthearted moment during a Senate plenary, Mr. Akpabio remarked, “Times are difficult, and wherever you see free food, please endeavour to avail yourself.” The comment, which has since gone viral, was met with laughter from fellow senators, despite the ongoing economic hardships affecting the country.
The difficult situation stems from a range of policies introduced by the Bola Tinubu administration, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, the floating of the naira, and increased taxes, all of which have led to a sharp rise in food prices. Many Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities as fuel prices continue to rise. In Abuja, fuel prices have surged to N1,030 per litre, while in Lagos, prices have climbed to N998 per litre, marking the second significant increase within a month.
Mr. Akpabio, who has previously faced criticism for his remarks, made a similar statement in July while addressing a group in Port Harcourt. Referring to planned protests over poor governance, he quipped, “Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be here eating,” sparking further controversy.
As Nigerians continue to grapple with inflation and economic challenges, the Senate President’s comments have stirred discussions about the role of leadership in addressing the nation’s pressing issues.
