One Year Anniversary: Rt. Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha’s Achievements in the 10th National Assembly

As the 10th National Assembly members approach their one-year anniversary in office, the people of Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency in Enugu State have a chance to reflect on the performance of their representative, Rt. Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha, who was inaugurated on June 13, 2023.

In a recent dialogue with Labour Party leaders at both the state and local levels, as well as constituents and supporters, Hon. Umeha received a resounding vote of confidence. His legislative achievements in the National Assembly have clearly resonated with the people, indicating that his tenure is off to a promising start. Despite the praise, Hon. Umeha remains focused and committed to furthering the progress of Ezeagu-Udi Federal Constituency.

Hon. Umeha’s contributions in the 10th National Assembly highlight his dedication and effectiveness. As the Deputy Speaker of the House Committee on Justice, a member of the Committee on Recovery of Funds Trapped in Banks and Other Financial Institutions, and a member of several other committees, including those on Public Accounts and Disease Control, he has demonstrated his capability and commitment.

His role in the Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, as one of only 37 lawmakers involved, underscores the trust placed in him to represent Nigerian interests on a historic level. This achievement has brought significant recognition to Ezeagu-Udi Federal Constituency.

Hon. Umeha has been active in addressing the needs of his constituents, balancing the demands of his office with the pressing issues of his community. Notably, he moved a motion in the House urging the Federal Government to investigate the killings at Ugwu Di Nso Junction in Udi Local Government Area and to provide relief to affected families. Another motion called for the completion of the Karshi/Apo Road to alleviate traffic congestion on the Keffi/Mararaba/Nyanya/Abuja Road.

In his legislative work, Hon. Umeha has sponsored at least five bills aimed at improving socio-economic conditions. These include a bill to establish the Federal College of Entrepreneurship and Skill Acquisition in Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency, a bill to amend the Universal Basic Education Act to abolish fees in public primary schools, a bill to mandate life insurance for NYSC members, and a bill to establish the National Football Academy in Ezeagu/Udi.

Hon. Umeha has also made significant strides in infrastructure and social utilities. He installed solar-powered street lights in Akama/Amankwo Ward to enhance security and promote economic activity. His commitment to education is evident in his partnership with secondary schools to provide free JAMB registration for eligible students.

Job creation for youths remains a priority for Hon. Umeha. Beyond employing aides and liaison officers, he has secured sustainable job opportunities in federal parastatals for qualified constituents. Plans are also in place for week-long skills acquisition training in various trades, aiming to equip youths with marketable skills.

Addressing security concerns, Hon. Umeha has promoted a community policing approach, involving residents in vigilance and information-sharing with local security agencies. A recent security summit he organized, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, and Civil Defence Corps, focused on tackling the rise in kidnappings in Ezeagu.

Hon. Umeha’s open-door policy ensures he remains accessible to his constituents, bridging the gap between Abuja and Enugu. He actively engages with the community, gathering feedback to inform his leadership.

Despite the challenges, including legal distractions, Hon. Umeha’s first year has been marked by significant achievements. His proactive approach offers hope for a brighter future for the people of Ezeagu and Udi Federal Constituency.
