The Rivers State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the violent incidents that occurred in several local government areas (LGAs) following the recent elections. The violence, which erupted on Monday, resulted in fatalities and the destruction of properties across three LGAs.
Commissioner of Police Mustapha Mohammed made this announcement during a press briefing on Wednesday after assessing the affected areas. He stated that a specialized team of experienced police officers, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police from the State Criminal Investigation Department, has been tasked with the investigation. Their findings will be forwarded to the Inspector General of Police upon completion.
The unrest followed the Inspector General of Police’s directive to reopen the secretariats of the 23 LGAs in the state. In response to the situation, Mohammed noted that police operatives have begun extensive patrols to reassure residents and enhance security in the region.
“We are conducting confidence-building patrols to reassure the public of their safety as part of our proactive security measures in Rivers State,” he said. “We are assessing the situation on the ground and have launched a full-scale investigation.”
The Commissioner emphasized the establishment of a dedicated investigation team, including seasoned officers, to thoroughly address the matter and prepare a report for the Inspector General.
He also urged stakeholders and the community to maintain peace and collaborate with the police to help restore calm in the state.
