The Federal Government is set to introduce a new curriculum for primary schools on Thursday, aimed at transforming Nigeria’s basic education system.
This revised curriculum, which incorporates moral values, is designed to promote societal reorientation and restore Nigeria’s core social values, as explained by Dr. Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Education.
During a recent event in Abuja, where teacher training was launched along with sensitization materials on moral reorientation organized by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Sununu highlighted that the updated curriculum will not only provide students with academic knowledge but also the ethical grounding necessary for them to positively impact society.
“The revised curriculum, to be unveiled at the National Council of Education (NCE) meeting, is aimed at instilling values that meet our societal needs and promote social renewal. We aspire to develop a generation of learners who are academically proficient, emotionally intelligent, socially aware, and morally responsible,” he stated.
The Minister noted that the new curriculum will encourage students to engage in discussions surrounding values and ethics, moving away from conventional teaching methods. He affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to investing in teacher development, ensuring educators possess the skills to address the changing needs of their students.
Dr. Sununu reiterated the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s focus on prioritizing education and the professional growth of teachers.
Additionally, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, underscored the importance of the new program in guiding teachers to impart moral values to students. He expressed optimism that this initiative would cultivate responsible citizens and help mitigate the educational challenges faced in the country.
“Our aim is to embed values within our educational framework, allowing young learners to embrace them and address the needs of their communities and the nation,” Dr. Bobboyi emphasized, asserting that the revised curriculum will be pivotal in achieving this objective.
