NDLEA Thwarts Drug Smuggling Attempts, Rejects Bribe: Recent Operations Unveiled

NDLEA Thwarts Drug Smuggling Attempts, Rejects Bribe

In a recent press release, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) disclosed its successful interception of various drug smuggling attempts across Nigeria, accompanied by the rejection of a substantial bribe. The operations, detailed by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, underscore the agency’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse in the country.

Chidinma Chinenye-Agbazue, aged 35, was apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while attempting to smuggle 20 parcels of Cannabis Sativa weighing 10.70kg to Doha, Qatar. The illicit drugs were cleverly concealed within African salad, popularly known as Abacha, and dried vegetables. The operation, executed in collaboration with the Department of State Services, reflects NDLEA’s vigilance in detecting and halting drug trafficking attempts.

NDLEA operatives, during an operation in Lagos State, thwarted an attempt by a suspect, Monday Okeke, to bribe them with a sum of N5 million. Despite the substantial bribe offered, the officers remained steadfast in their commitment to upholding the law and documenting the incident as evidence for prosecution.

In addition to Chidinma’s arrest, NDLEA operatives arrested suspects in various states across Nigeria, including Lagos, Bayelsa, Ogun, Taraba, Abia, Ondo, and Edo. These operations resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of opioids such as tramadol, codeine syrup, and cannabis sativa. Notable seizures include 842,560 pills of opioids, 15 litres of codeine syrup, and 596 grams of Molly from suspects Monday Okeke and Chigozie Emeka in Lagos.

NDLEA’s efforts extended to rural areas, where suspects engaged in large-scale cultivation and production of illicit substances. Operations in forested regions of Edo and Ondo States led to the arrest of multiple suspects and the destruction of over 3,065.255kg of cannabis found on illegal farms.

The success of NDLEA’s operations underscores the importance of collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and the vigilance of its officers. By working in tandem with partners and maintaining a proactive approach, NDLEA aims to curtail drug trafficking and safeguard public health and safety.

NDLEA’s recent operations demonstrate its unwavering commitment to combating drug-related crimes and preserving the well-being of Nigerians. The agency remains resolute in its pursuit of drug traffickers and abusers, with a firm stance against corruption and illicit activities within its ranks.
