INEC Office in Benue State Torched by Youths Protesting Bandit Attacks

Protesting youths in Sankara, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, set fire to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday in response to ongoing bandit attacks in the region.

The incident, reported by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, occurred at 2 pm on Wednesday, according to a statement.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Benue State, Prof. Sam Egwu, confirmed that the office sustained extensive damage with no reported casualties. The attack resulted in the destruction of office furniture, 10 electric generators, 300 ballot boxes, and 270 voting cubicles.

Security agencies have been alerted and have deployed personnel to the area in response to the incident, Olumekun added.
