Marriage Dissolved in Ibadan Court Following Infidelity Accusations

Court Dissolves Marriage After Infidelity Allegations in Ibadan

In a recent session at the Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan, Omolara Busari sought to end her 14-year marriage to Olanrewaju Busari, citing pressure to swear against infidelity as a key reason for the split.

Omolara, a mother of two and a footwear trader at Ogunpa market, explained that her husband’s behavior changed dramatically following his return from a trip to Lagos in 2020, where he had gone to seek better opportunities. She claimed he began to doubt her loyalty, accusing her of infidelity without cause.

“Lanre’s attitude shifted completely after he came back from Lagos. He stopped talking to me, forced me out of our bedroom, and made me sleep in the corridor,” she recounted. “He then placed a charm on the ground, demanding that I cross it to prove my innocence, but I refused. My parents supported my decision not to engage with such practices, which led to more insults and disrespect from him.”

Omolara mentioned that despite interventions from concerned friends and family, Olanrewaju remained upset and eventually left the family home.

In his defense, Olanrewaju cited ongoing stress, lack of care, and frequent arguments as reasons for wanting to end the marriage. The generator dealer claimed that his wife insisted he had no right to question her lifestyle. He expressed frustration over Omolara bringing their children to his shop to ask for money, despite his regular financial support.

During the proceedings, Olanrewaju requested protection from public harassment and intimidation.

In her ruling, Court President Mrs. S.M. Akintayo acknowledged Olanrewaju’s unwillingness to continue the marriage, leading to its dissolution. She determined that the marriage was indeed valid under customary law.

Mrs. Akintayo granted custody of the couple’s two children to Omolara, emphasizing her ability to provide for their needs. However, she mandated Olanrewaju to remain financially responsible for their education, healthcare, and overall welfare.

The court also issued a restraining order against Omolara to prevent her from disturbing or interfering in Olanrewaju’s personal life, while ensuring that he has reasonable access to the children.
