Israel has confirmed the killing of Yahya Sinwar, the newly appointed leader of Hamas, during a gun battle in Gaza. Sinwar, aged 60, was one of the key figures behind the October 7 attacks in Israel, which resulted in multiple casualties.
The Israeli military announced on Thursday that Sinwar, who took over as Hamas leader in August following the assassination of his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in a firefight with Israeli forces. His body was recovered after clashes in Gaza on Wednesday, and Israeli authorities confirmed his identity through dental records and fingerprints.
Hamas has yet to officially acknowledge Sinwar’s death. His brief tenure as leader came after the death of Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Iran on July 31.
Sinwar had been a significant figure within Hamas since the 1980s and served as the group’s leader in Gaza from 2017 until his elevation to overall leadership in August. His death is another key moment in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
