Gunmen Attack Anambra Community, Leaving Scores Dead During Traditional Festival

Gunmen Kill 16 in Anambra During Traditional Festival Attack

A devastating attack occurred in the Nibo community, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday, when gunmen killed at least 16 people, most of them youths. The tragedy took place during the town’s Onwa Asaa traditional festival, a time meant for community celebration.

According to reports, the assailants, who were masked and driving a black Lexus SUV, stormed a local restaurant where a group of youths were gathered, enjoying food and drinks. Without warning, the gunmen opened fire on the crowd.

A disturbing video has since surfaced online, showing graphic images of victims lying lifeless at the scene of the attack. Below is the video.

As of the time of this report, at least 10 people have been confirmed dead, with the number expected to rise as more information becomes available. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with festivalgoers fleeing in terror as the gunfire erupted.

“It was like a battlefield. The gunmen arrived and started shooting indiscriminately. People were screaming, running, and trying to escape the chaos,” one witness recounted.

The motive behind the attack remains unknown, though some have speculated it may be linked to cult activities in the area. Concerned residents are now urging the authorities to take swift action to restore peace and ensure the safety of the community.

“We can’t continue living in fear like this. What was supposed to be a joyful celebration has turned into a nightmare. The government must act immediately to bring security to our community,” one local resident said.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attack, describing it as “cult-related.” Speaking on behalf of the command, Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has already deployed additional anti-crime units to the area to maintain order and prevent further violence.

In a statement, SP Ikenga urged eyewitnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending those responsible for the attack.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate deployment of more operatives to the area. We are calling on anyone with useful information about this incident to help the police in identifying the perpetrators,” Ikenga said.
