Yoruba Council Threatens Market Closures Over Dispute with Igbo Traders

Yoruba Group Threatens Market Closures Over Igbo Traders' Disregard for Traditional Authority

The Yoruba Council Worldwide (YCW), a prominent socio-cultural group, has issued a stern warning to shut down markets in Lagos State, including the renowned Computer Village, if Igbo traders continue to disregard directives from the Iyaloja-General of Lagos State, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.

Addressing the press at the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, YCW President Oladotun Hassan expressed the group’s frustration with what they view as a deliberate undermining of Yoruba traditional practices. The dispute centers around allegations that some Igbo traders in Computer Village have ignored a cease-and-desist order related to market levies imposed by the Iyaloja-General.

Hassan emphasized that such actions are seen as an attack on Yoruba traditions and the authority of the Iyaloja and Babalojas, who are appointed to oversee market activities and ensure adherence to traditional customs. He warned that if these issues are not resolved, the YCW will take decisive action, including the potential closure of markets that challenge the authority of Yoruba traditional leaders.

“We will not hesitate to take action if this disrespect continues,” Hassan stated. “Our traditional heritage and the roles of our leaders in managing market activities must be respected.”

The YCW also called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the situation and address the alleged provocations by some Igbo market leaders. They urged that the investigation be conducted promptly to prevent further escalation of tensions.

Additionally, Hassan announced that the YCW plans to convene a summit with Yoruba monarchs, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in November 2024. This event, named Monarchs 2024, will take place in Lagos State and aims to strengthen unity and address ongoing issues within the Yoruba community.

The YCW’s move reflects a broader concern over the preservation of traditional practices and the need for mutual respect among diverse ethnic groups operating within Lagos and other Yoruba regions.
