The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a nationwide protest set to begin on September 15, 2024, in response to the recent rise in fuel prices and dissatisfaction with the performance of the NNPC Director General, Mele Kyari.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NANS President Okunomo Henry Adewumi outlined the association’s plan to lead a significant shutdown of all major cities across Nigeria. The group is calling for an immediate rollback of the fuel price increase and the removal of Kyari from his position.
The notice assures that the planned demonstrations will be conducted peacefully and within the bounds of the law.
“We are initiating this mass action due to the severe hardship inflicted on Nigerians by the recent fuel price hikes and the perceived incompetence of Mr. Mele Kyari as NNPC Director General,” Adewumi said.
The statement continued: “The persistent rise in fuel costs is severely affecting the masses, and as representatives of the student body, we cannot remain passive while our future is compromised. We are demanding that the fuel price increase be reversed and that Kyari be removed from his position.”
NANS has called upon all Nigerian students to join the protest and make their voices heard. The association emphasizes that while the protests will be large-scale, they will be conducted in a lawful and orderly manner.
