Amid a legal battle for his release, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), expressed his commitment to restoring peace in Nigeria’s South-East region. His assertion came shortly after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed his fresh bail application related to charges of treasonable felony brought against him by the Federal Government.
Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021 after being re-arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria, vowed to bring about peace in the South-East once he is released. Despite previous legal rulings in his favor, including an order for his release by the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court’s recent decision allowed the government to continue prosecuting him on a reduced number of charges.
Expressing his frustration with the legal proceedings, Kanu emphasized his belief that certain government officials are complicit in perpetuating insecurity in the region for personal gain. He asserted his authority and influence, suggesting that peace would swiftly return to the South-East upon his release.
Kanu’s comments come at a time when the South-East region has been grappling with various security challenges, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and killings. Recent incidents, such as the murder of Dr. Chike Akunyili and an attack on Senator Ifeanyi Uba’s convoy, highlight the severity of the security situation in the area.
Despite the legal setbacks, Kanu remains resolute in his determination to address the underlying issues fueling insecurity in the South-East. His statements reflect the aspirations of many in the region who yearn for lasting peace and stability.
