A truck driver, yet to be identified, is currently in police custody following allegations of causing the death of Miss Mary Ogechi, a recent graduate of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday along the Aba-Owerri Road, where the deceased, who had recently celebrated her graduation as the best accounting student in her department, was reportedly on her way to process her results for National Youth Service Corps mobilization.
According to eyewitnesses, the young graduate was struck by a commercial tricycle rider, causing her to fall onto the road. Subsequently, a trailer attempted to avoid her but tragically ran over her legs, resulting in severe injuries. Despite efforts to rush her to the hospital, Miss Ogechi later succumbed to her injuries.
In response to the tragic loss, students from the polytechnic staged a protest, blocking the expressway to express their grievances. Family members and friends mourned the untimely passing of Miss Ogechi, highlighting her qualities and the tragic circumstances of her death.
Additionally, some Abia polytechnic students voiced their frustrations over the lack of road safety measures, including the absence of speed bumps, which have resulted in numerous accidents involving staff and students. They demanded swift action from the government to address these concerns.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Chinaka Maureen, assured that the driver was in custody and that investigations were underway. Measures were taken to calm the situation, with efforts to provide updates on the investigation as it progresses.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for improved road safety measures and highlights the devastating impact of reckless driving on innocent lives.
