
A Chief Magistrate Court in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered the remand of a 31-year-old man, Oluwasegun Victor, for allegedly raping and impregnating a minor. The accused, who resides in the Oba Ile community in Akure North Local Government Area, was arrested by officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Victor was arraigned on a one-count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. During Thursday’s court session, NSCDC prosecutor David Ebriku stated that the defendant’s actions violated Section 31(1) of the Child Rights Laws of Ondo State 2007, and the offence is punishable under Section 31(2) of the same law.
The charge reads: “That you, Olusegun Victor, male, 31 years old, at about 1 pm on the 24th day of July 2024, at No. 73 Owode, off Airport Road, Oba-Ile, Akure, within Akure Magisterial District, did commit a felony, to wit, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, aged 15, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 31(1) of the Child Rights’ Laws of Ondo State 2007 and punishable under Section 31(2) of the same laws.”
The prosecutor requested that the court remand the accused in a correctional facility. The defense counsel, Alex Olademehin, asked for time to respond to the remand request.
Magistrate Taiwo Lebi ruled that the defendant be remanded at a correctional centre and adjourned the case to September 19, 2024, for the hearing of the bail application.
