Tragic Electrocution: 15-Year-Old Girl Fatally Injured While Fetching Water in Ogun

A devastating incident occurred in the Olomore Housing Estate area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, where a 15-year-old girl lost her life due to electrocution while fetching water.

According to a statement released by SP Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, the incident occurred on Sunday and was reported to the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa by Onyekachi Silas.

Onyekachi recounted to the DPO that his younger brother informed him via phone call that on the night of March 31, 2024, around 11:50 PM, a 15-year-old girl, whose name was withheld, and who is also the sister of his brother’s wife, was residing with them.

He explained that during a power outage in the house, the girl, identified as Miracle, went to fetch water from the well. Tragically, as she was fetching water, the power was restored by IBDEC (Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company), resulting in her being electrocuted by a naked cable from the pumping machine inside the well.

Miracle was immediately rushed to Rose Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by the duty doctor.

The statement highlighted that investigations into the incident have commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, particularly the negligence involved in allowing a naked wire to be immersed in the well. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at Oke Lantoro morgue.
