Nigerian Prisons Hold 3,590 Death Row Inmates, Reveals NCoS Report

3,590 Inmates on Death Row as Nigerian Correctional Service Reveals Prison Statistics

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has disclosed that 3,590 inmates across various custodial centers in Nigeria are currently on death row. This information was revealed by the NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Mr. Umar, as of September 3, 2024, the total prison population in Nigeria stands at 84,741 inmates, including 82,821 males and 1,920 females. Out of this number, 57,750 inmates are awaiting trial, with 56,303 males and 1,447 females still awaiting judicial proceedings.

Additionally, there are 21,900 convicted inmates, comprising 21,519 males and 381 females. The number of inmates serving life sentences totals 1,501, including 1,478 males and 23 females. The death row population consists of 3,517 males and 73 females, making a total of 3,590 individuals.

Mr. Umar acknowledged the significant challenge posed by the high number of awaiting trial inmates, but assured that the NCoS is actively working to address the issue. Efforts include ensuring timely judicial processes for these individuals and implementing various measures to reduce custodial congestion.

“The initiative and support of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, have been instrumental in reducing the inmate population. Recently, 4,063 individuals were released after opting to pay fines or compensation,” Mr. Umar stated.

He also mentioned that the NCoS is addressing overcrowding by constructing new facilities, expanding community sentencing options, improving court logistics, and implementing other decongestion strategies.

In terms of security, Mr. Umar noted that the NCoS has strengthened the security of custodial facilities to prevent external threats, ensuring a stable and secure environment with no incidents of internal unrest.

The NCoS has also made strides in inmate care and rehabilitation, with a focus on personal reformation and successful reintegration into society. One of the highlights of these efforts is the partnership with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), which has enabled a significant number of inmates to pursue academic programs while serving their sentences.

As of August 31, 2024, 1,282 inmates were enrolled in various programs at NOUN’s special study center, with 1,215 studying for Bachelor’s degrees, 62 pursuing Post Graduate Diplomas (PGD) and Master’s degrees, and five inmates working towards a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), with three currently in the process of writing their theses.
