Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has issued a stern warning against the planned declaration of Biafra, set for December 2, 2024. The group expressed serious concern over the recent developments and the actions of Simon Ekpa, who is currently detained, and his supporters who have been advocating for this declaration.
In a statement released on Friday, Ohanaeze’s Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, condemned the actions of Ekpa and his associates, describing them as responsible for an ongoing cycle of violence, fear, and economic decline that has severely affected the Southeast region of Nigeria.
The statement highlighted the significant damage caused by Ekpa’s campaign over the past three years, stating that what was once a region known for its vibrant economy and rich cultural heritage now suffers from insecurity that disrupts everyday life. Traditional events, weddings, and even community gatherings are often forced to take place outside of the Southeast due to the constant threat of violence.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo questioned the effectiveness of the Biafran independence movement, pointing out that it had not brought any tangible benefits to the people of the region. Instead, they argued, it had resulted in the loss of over 34 trillion naira in potential investments across the 95 local government areas in the Southeast. The organization also criticized those who were profiting from the ongoing chaos while the Igbo people were bearing the brunt of the suffering.
Addressing the group organizing the Biafra declaration in Finland, Ohanaeze emphasized that these individuals did not have the authority to represent the voices of the Igbos, either in Nigeria or abroad. The organization urged them to reconsider their actions, which it believes will only deepen the violence and economic hardship in the Southeast.
Isiguzoro also warned that any push for a Biafran declaration could worsen Simon Ekpa’s legal situation in Finland, with potential legal consequences expected in May 2025. He called on those involved to step back from this destructive path, which he described as leading only to further suffering.
The statement also pointed out the contrast between how the Federal Government has handled negotiations with other militant groups, such as those in the Niger Delta and former Boko Haram insurgents, by offering amnesty and rehabilitation. Meanwhile, those advocating for Biafran independence have faced harsh repression.
Ohanaeze concluded by warning that any further attempts to declare Biafran independence will result in the promoters being held fully responsible for the negative consequences that follow.
