CAF clears Osimhen, Simon, Troost-Ekong after anti-doping check

The Anti-doping test administered by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, and William Troost Ekong has yielded negative results.

African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, and the other two Super Eagles players, Moses Simon and William Troost-Ekong, passed the Confederation of African Football (CAF) random anti-doping tests and are free to take part in their quarter-final clash with Angola on Friday.

Anti-doping tests are an integral part of international sports, ensuring fair play, safeguarding athletes’ health, and maintaining the integrity of competitions. Random testing, as conducted by CAF, adds an element of unpredictability, reinforcing the commitment to a clean and level playing field. The recent confirmation that Osimhen, Simon, and Troost-Ekong have passed these tests is a testament to the professionalism and dedication of the Super Eagles squad.

Victor Osimhen, recently crowned African Player of the Year, has been a standout performer for both club and country. The confirmation of his clean anti-doping test is not only a relief for Nigerian fans but also underscores the commitment of top-tier players to adhere to the highest standards of sportsmanship. Osimhen’s presence on the field adds a layer of confidence and skill to the Super Eagles, making his eligibility for the quarter-final clash a significant boost.

AzeeRe recalls that CAF picked Nigerian international striker Victor Osimhen, Super Eagles winger and defender Moses Simon, and William Troost-Ekong for random drug tests after their last group match and 2-0 Round of 16 victory over Cameroon.

Victor Osimhen played a significant role for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage and the Round of 16 clash against Cameroon.

Reports indicated that the Nigerian international underwent the test following the match against Guinea-Bissau.

The clearance of Moses Simon and William Troost-Ekong is equally vital for the Super Eagles. Simon, known for his flair on the wings and attacking prowess, has been a consistent threat to opposing defenses. Troost-Ekong, a stalwart in the defensive line, brings stability and leadership to the team. Their eligibility for the upcoming clash ensures that the Super Eagles can maintain their strategic balance both offensively and defensively.

CAF’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of African football is evident in its stringent anti-doping measures. Random tests conducted during major tournaments serve as a deterrent to potential violations and reassure fans and players alike that the beautiful game is being played on a fair and level field. The swift confirmation of the players’ eligibility also reflects the efficiency of the anti-doping protocols in place.

As the Super Eagles gear up for the quarter-final clash against Angola, the cleared players can now focus solely on their on-field performance. The tension that often accompanies anti-doping tests is replaced with a renewed sense of determination to succeed in the tournament. The quarter-final stage brings increased stakes, and the Super Eagles will look to capitalize on the momentum gained from a clean bill of health for their key players.

Similarly, FC Nantes forward Simon Moses and William Troost-Ekong, have also been subjected to dope tests.

The random tests are standard procedures, typically conducted on players whose enhanced energy levels may raise suspicions of substance use.

Additionally, sources revealed that two Cameroonian players also underwent similar tests, noting that Osimhen is not the sole player involved in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Coach Peseiro’s side will face Angola in the quarterfinals of the 2023 AFCON tournament on Friday.
