The Lagos State government has announced plans to initiate legal proceedings concerning the death of popular rapper Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as MohBad, nearly a year after his passing. Lawal Pedro (SAN), the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, shared this information during a press briefing on Monday, which preceded a strategic stakeholders’ meeting commemorating his first year in office.
Pedro acknowledged the delays in the investigation, attributing them to the extensive time required for forensic analyses and toxicology reports. He stated, “I understand there has been a delay, but it is due to the thoroughness of the investigation. In criminal matters, there is no statute of limitations, so it’s crucial to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ensure a solid case can be presented in court.”
He emphasized that rushing the process could lead to insufficient evidence and possible dismissal of charges, which would only cause further frustration. “The same people complaining about the delays would also be the first to criticize if we rushed to court without proper investigations,” he added.
Pedro confirmed that the toxicology report from the United States has been received and is currently with the coroner. He mentioned that Mohbad’s family had requested additional time for their own forensic analysis, but he believes that this should not impede the legal process. “We expect the legal advice to be ready soon, and those who will be prosecuted will face charges based on the evidence collected.”
He also noted that the investigation had been hindered by the destruction of the Lagos Forensic Laboratory during the EndSARS protests, which led to costly delays and the need to send samples abroad for analysis.
Background on Mohbad’s Death
Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, with initial reports attributing his death to natural causes. However, this has been met with public skepticism and demands for a more thorough investigation. The autopsy intended to clarify the circumstances surrounding his death became controversial, raising questions among family, friends, and the Nigerian music community regarding its findings.
Critics have accused authorities of mishandling the investigation, prompting the Lagos State government to initiate a coroner’s inquest, which resulted in a second autopsy. This move reflects the public’s growing mistrust in the integrity of the initial findings.
Since his death, Mohbad’s family and associates have been embroiled in disputes regarding accountability. The search for truth has involved accusations against medical professionals and concerns about potential foul play from those within Mohbad’s circle, adding to the family’s grief and complicating the healing process.
Upcoming Law Enforcement Meeting
During the press briefing, Pedro also announced an upcoming strategic meeting scheduled for October 23 and 24, 2024, at Isaac John Street, GRA Ikeja. This meeting will bring together key stakeholders from various law enforcement agencies, including the Nigerian Police, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The theme of the meeting, “Enhancing Collaboration for Effective Justice Delivery,” aims to improve inter-agency cooperation and address ongoing challenges in law enforcement across Lagos State. Pedro noted that this initiative stems from recommendations made during the Lagos Justice Summit held in May, which identified the need for better coordination within the justice system.
