The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has extended the age limit for university admissions, allowing candidates who will turn 16 by August 31, 2025, to be considered for the 2024/2025 academic session.
This decision comes after previous deliberations at the 2024 Policy Meeting, where it was decided that the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions would be 16 years, with a cut-off date set for December 31, 2024. However, this sparked mixed reactions from parents and the public, leading to further review.
In a statement released on Thursday by JAMB’s Public Relations Officer, Fabian Benjamin, the board clarified that the extension is in response to some institutions offering admissions beyond July 2025. As a result, candidates who meet all other academic requirements and will turn 16 by August 31, 2025, are now eligible for admission.
“This measure ensures fairness, especially for those whose 2024 admission processes will extend into August 2025,” the statement read, adding that institutions are free to enforce their own policies if they prefer to maintain the 16-year age limit within 2024.
