Seven-hour power outages are expected in Abuja - TCN

To carry out planned preventive maintenance on its 132/33kV 2X100MVA power Transformers in Apo Transmission Substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced that parts of the Federal Capital Territory will experience a seven-hour power interruption on Saturday and Sunday.

This was contained in a statement by the TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, on Saturday.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that its maintenance crew will carry out planned preventive maintenance on its 132/33kV 2X100MVA power transformers in Apo Transmission Substation,” she said.

The maintenance is slated for Saturday and Sunday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.

“Consequently, there will be power interruption through both transformers and Abuja DisCo will be unable to offtake power from the two transformers for distribution to its customers,” the statement added.

The affected areas, Garki, Asokoro, Lugbe, Airport Road, Gudu, Gaduwa, parts of Lokogoma, Apo, Kabusa, Guzape and Nepa Junction, will experience power outages for seven hours on Saturday and Sunday.

She noted that the power supply would be restored on both days by 4 pm.

“TCN regrets the inconvenience this may cause electricity consumers in the affected areas,” the statement concluded.

Despite the temporary inconvenience posed by the scheduled electricity interruptions, TCN has taken proactive measures to minimize the impact on consumers. By providing advance notice of the maintenance schedule, TCN allows residents and businesses in affected areas to plan accordingly and make necessary arrangements to mitigate the disruption. Additionally, TCN has assured stakeholders that efforts will be made to expedite the maintenance work and restore normal power supply as soon as possible.

It is worth noting that periodic maintenance activities are not unique to Abuja or Nigeria but are standard practice in power systems worldwide. Utility companies and transmission operators globally adhere to strict maintenance schedules to uphold the reliability and safety of their infrastructure. In doing so, they ensure that electricity remains a dependable resource for powering homes, businesses, industries, and essential services.

The announcement of the planned maintenance serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity sector, including infrastructure deficiencies, capacity constraints, and operational inefficiencies. While maintenance efforts contribute to addressing some of these challenges, they are just one aspect of broader reforms needed to transform the power sector and meet the growing demand for electricity in the country.

Moving forward, it is essential for stakeholders across the electricity value chain to collaborate and prioritize investments in infrastructure modernization, capacity expansion, and technology adoption. By embracing innovative solutions, such as renewable energy integration, smart grid technologies, and energy efficiency measures, Nigeria can enhance the resilience and sustainability of its power sector while meeting the evolving needs of its population.
