Nigerian Police Find Abuja-based Journalist Stabbed To Death, Days After Going Missing

On Wednesday, after being reported missing for five days, a journalist with Atar Communication, the owners of Liberty TV/Radio, was discovered dead in Abuja. On-Air Personality (OAP) Joel Waksi was scheduled to return to the Mpape office by 2 p.m. on Saturday, having left work at roughly 9 p.m. on Friday.

The Group General Manager (GGM) of Atar Communication, Balarabe Muhammad, confirmed to Daily Trust that the police in Mpape division reported finding his body near the Panteka area. His body was taken to Kubwa General Hospital morgue. He had been stabbed in the neck, and his phone was missing.

He said, “It was suspected that he was attacked by the phone snatchers,” adding that two months back, he survived a similar attack, where he was stabbed below his abdomen, but he was treated.

“He was supposed to be on break till Monday, having worked at night; however, due to internal arrangements among colleagues during such public holidays, he was billed to report back to duty the next day afternoon, but he never did.’’

Joel, as he was fondly called among his colleagues, was said to be a hardworking and very creative staff.

As of the time this story was filed, SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT police command, has not responded to any inquiries regarding the incident.

Joel Waksi’s murder has broken the hearts of his coworkers, family, and the community at large. His commitment to his profession and his love of storytelling will always be appreciated. There is hope that justice will be served and that steps will be made to stop similar tragedies in the future as the inquiry progresses. The tragic passing of Joel Waksi serves as a sobering reminder of both the transience of life and the constant threats that confront our society. It is an appeal to each and every one of us to fight for a more secure and equitable society in which people may live and work without fear.
