Former President Goodluck Jonathan, House Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and other prominent figures gathered at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja to pay tribute to Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, reflecting on his legacy of integrity and service.
In a statement from Bernard Akoma, Secretary of the Ogbonnaya Onu Burial Media Committee, Jonathan praised Onu’s life, noting his contributions to public service were built on values rather than material wealth. Jonathan highlighted Onu’s dedication to knowledge, marked by his numerous books, and his optimistic outlook, often seen in photos throughout the hall. Jonathan also commended Onu’s visionary work in the Ministry of Science and Technology, advocating for technology as an alternative revenue source for Nigeria—a vision Jonathan felt was hindered by systemic challenges.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu honored Dr. Onu, a former Abia State governor and Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, for his commitment to unity, humility, and public service. Describing the memorial event as a “Night of Unanswered Questions,” Kalu reflected on Onu’s efforts to unify Nigeria, sharing a personal story of Onu’s generosity when he financially supported Kalu’s campaign despite not knowing him well. “He may not have been the wealthiest, but his patriotic spirit ran deep, supporting future leaders through his actions,” Kalu remarked.
Kalu further admired Onu’s calm approach to resolving conflicts and his dedication to character over power. “Dr. Onu inspired through his character and was consistent in his principles,” Kalu reflected.
Minister of Works Senator David Umahi described Onu as a guiding light in their community of Uburu and Ebonyi State. Umahi praised Onu’s commitment to excellence and integrity, which served as an enduring inspiration to many.
Former Cross River State Governor Chief Clement Ebri recalled that Onu’s admirable qualities led to his selection as chairman of the country’s governors’ forum during his tenure. Ebri noted with sorrow that Onu was the 16th governor from his generation of 30 to pass away.
The ceremony gathered many of Nigeria’s political leaders, each remembering Onu’s unflagging dedication to unity and his legacy of public service that continues to inspire.
