Simi participates in demonstrations against taxes in Kenya

Simi Expresses Support for Kenyan Demonstrators Opposing Tax Increase

Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has joined the chorus of support for the ongoing anti-tax hike protests in Kenya.

The demonstrations known as “RejectFinanceBill2024” are a result of the general discontent with Kenya’s planned financial laws. The law raises taxes in multiple ways in an effort to boost government coffers. Opponents counter that this will further burden already struggling households and exacerbate economic inequality by unfairly affecting low- and middle-class earners. Kenya, like many other nations, is facing economic difficulties made worse by international occurrences like the COVID-19 epidemic and the conflict in Ukraine, which have strained supply lines and raised inflationary pressures. The planned tax increases have been viewed in this context as going too far, causing a great deal of anger.

Kenyan teenagers are presently opposing the proposed tax increase by staging large-scale protests under the hashtag “RejectFinanceBill2024.”

Simi in support for the Kenyan protesters, took to her social media handle on Tuesday night to acknowledge the sacrifices they are making in their fight for freedom and rights.

Simi’s decision to publicly support the Kenyan youths is significant. As an influential figure in the African entertainment industry, her endorsement brings additional visibility to the protests. In a series of social media posts, Simi highlighted the sacrifices being made by the demonstrators, commending their courage and resilience.

“The fight for one’s rights is never easy, and the sacrifices being made by these young people in Kenya are truly commendable,” Simi wrote. “It’s important that we stand with them and amplify their voices. They are fighting not just for themselves, but for a fairer and more just society.”

She wrote:

“I stand with the people of Kenya. It is both powerful and heartbreaking for a people to have to fight and die for freedoms and rights. Godspeed and Strength. [Hash tag] RejectFinanceBill2024.”

In additional posts, Simi lamented the struggles faced by Africans due to poor leadership, saying:

“Wow. When you’ve had enough, the fight is almost inevitable.

“African leaders – haven’t you done enough?

“I can’t wait for the day Africa is not a weapon fashioned against Africans. All of this amazing Black power and human resource, but the majority are not likely to thrive unless they run.”
