Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly declared that he will no longer support Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in any future political endeavors. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Wike expressed his frustration over what he described as betrayal and false accusations from Fubara.
Wike revealed that the rift began after Fubara allegedly claimed that Wike had demanded sums of N20 billion and N100 billion from him. Responding to these allegations, Wike firmly denied the accusations and accused the governor of spreading lies.
“I will never support Fubara in my political life again. People should know me; I am not a man who deals with dishonesty. I brought him up, supported him, and he has now turned around to accuse me of demanding money. That is not the truth,” Wike stated emphatically.
The FCT Minister highlighted the efforts he made to help build the political foundation that led to Fubara’s rise, suggesting that the governor would not have achieved his current position without the collective sacrifices of many, including Wike himself.
“He wouldn’t have even come in fifth place if not for the efforts of several people who labored to put up a structure. I sacrificed a lot, but now he has turned against me,” Wike lamented.
Wike also accused Fubara of taking advantage of his relationship with President Bola Tinubu, citing a specific instance where the president asked the governor to re-submit a budget, which Fubara allegedly refused to do. According to Wike, this action displayed a disregard for the rule of law, leading him to sever any future political ties with the governor.
“Why would I support a man who didn’t obey the rule of law? Why should I back someone who promotes impunity?” Wike questioned, making it clear that his disillusionment with Fubara’s leadership runs deep.
This public fallout between Wike and Fubara, two key political figures in Rivers State, is expected to have significant political implications as the state heads towards the 2027 elections.
