Wike Warns PDP Governors Against Interference in Rivers State Politics
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, cautioning them against attempting to influence the party’s structure in Rivers State.
Wike, speaking at the PDP state congress in Port Harcourt on Saturday, declared that he would resist any efforts to wrest control of the PDP from his faction in the state. His remarks came in response to a meeting of PDP governors in Taraba State on August 23, where they expressed support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara amidst the ongoing party crisis.
Wike criticized the governors for their involvement, threatening to cause political unrest in any state whose governor interfered in Rivers State’s PDP affairs. He specifically warned that any attempts to undermine his influence would be met with severe consequences.
“Let me assure all of you, not while we live will anybody take away the structure of the PDP from us,” Wike said. “I pity those governors because I will put fire in their states. When God has given you peace, you say you don’t want peace – anything you see, you take.”
Wike’s comments underscore the deepening rift within the PDP in Rivers State, which has been plagued by internal conflicts following his departure as governor. Governor Fubara, notably absent from the congress, has found himself at odds with Wike, further fueling the ongoing tension.
The congress was attended by various party members, including current and former lawmakers, ex-council chairmen, and other party loyalists.
