Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a formal apology to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following a controversial comment he made during a recent Senate session.
During the plenary last week, Akpabio had reprimanded Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying she should not speak until recognized, and described the Senate as not being a “nightclub.” This remark sparked a backlash on social media, with many women’s groups criticizing it as sexist and disrespectful.
In his apology delivered at Tuesday’s session, Akpabio expressed regret, stating, “I would never intentionally demean any woman. I sincerely apologize to you, Senator Natasha. The reaction on social media indicates there are adversaries, and I felt it necessary to publicly address this issue. My intent was not to cause harm. We should focus on advancing the country.”
He also addressed rumors circulating online about having “numerous girlfriends,” firmly denying these claims. Akpabio emphasized the importance of decorum on social media and discouraged any regulatory action driven by anger.
