Rt. Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha, representing Ezeagu-Udi Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, participated in the inaugural National Human Rights Conference yesterday 17th July 2024. Organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in collaboration with the Human Rights Institute, the event took place at the NBA National Headquarters in Abuja.
The conference, themed “Human Rights in the Workplace: The Role of Lawyers,” highlighted the ongoing abuses faced by workers due to sex, ethnic, religious, and other prejudices in modern workplaces.
Representing the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, Hon. Umeha underscored the importance of upholding human rights and respect in the workplace as essential elements of fair labor practices. He stressed that all employers must adopt and enforce these principles.
Hon. Umeha also pointed out that the NBA is uniquely positioned to leverage its extensive network and influence to ensure that workplace human rights violations are investigated and prosecuted when they breach Nigeria’s criminal codes. He highlighted the NBA’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL) as a key player in this process.
Expressing his gratitude to the organizers, Hon. Umeha praised the initiative behind the conference. He expressed optimism that the event would serve as a crucial platform for addressing human rights issues, ensuring compliance, and recommending sanctions for violations in the workplace and beyond.
