There is widespread outcry in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State following the tragic killing of a final-year student from Niger Delta University on Monday.
According to community sources, Francis Palowei, a native of Obrigbene community in Ekeremor Local Government Area, was fatally stabbed at the Sand Dump, a popular student hangout spot. The incident occurred after he reportedly refused to pay a demanded N150 levy by local youths.
Palowei, set to graduate on July 24, 2024, during the university’s next convocation, was attacked by the youths, leading to his untimely death.
Following the incident, the Nigeria Police Force has mobilized to Amassoma to apprehend the perpetrators. Sources, who preferred anonymity, disclosed that university students have also joined in the search for the assailants. The shock from the tragedy has affected some students’ attendance in classes, although academic activities remain ongoing, according to university authorities.
Confirming the incident, Niger Delta University’s Public Relations Officer, Indoni Engezi, emphasized that while the incident impacted the host community, it did not disrupt university operations.
Engezi clarified that the Sand Dump premises, where the incident occurred, is typically free for use, although some local youths occasionally request N150 from visitors.
In response to the situation, Police Public Relations Officer, Musa Mohammed, assured that Commissioner Francis Idu has deployed additional personnel to Amassoma to ensure peace and security. He confirmed that the police have launched a vigorous search for the perpetrators of this tragic incident.
