In a violent attack early Tuesday morning, gunmen targeted the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The assailants, armed with explosives, stormed the police facility and also attacked the nearby Oba Civic Centre.
According to sources, a police corporal was killed during the assault, and several others were injured. The attack is believed to have been carried out by a secessionist group, though the exact motive remains unclear.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement. Ikenga detailed that the attackers shot indiscriminately and used petrol bombs, resulting in fires that damaged parts of the police station and the civic center.
“The Police-led Joint Security Force, including the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other security agencies, are currently conducting a joint operation in Oba and surrounding areas,” Ikenga said. “Unfortunately, a police corporal who was fatally wounded has paid the supreme price. The fire was extinguished with the help of officers on duty and the responding Joint Security team.”
The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, condemned the attack, calling it an assault on the nation itself. He vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
