The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has initiated talks with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, confirmed the discussions in an interview with Channels Television on Monday. Abdullahi attributed the party’s loss in the 2023 elections to the departure of Kwankwaso and Obi to other parties shortly before the presidential race.
Despite this setback, Abdullahi expressed optimism that re-engaging these prominent political figures, who were previously affiliated with the PDP, could be pivotal for the party’s success in the upcoming elections.
He remarked, “Had we retained Kwankwaso and Obi within our fold, we believe we could have closed the electoral gap and secured victory. Their presence could have significantly altered the outcome, potentially alleviating the current challenges faced by Nigerians.”
Ongoing negotiations aim to reintegrate Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Kwankwaso, who represented the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), back into the PDP before the 2027 elections.
