Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has expressed confidence that Peter Obi can secure the presidency in 2027, emphasizing that the movement will be better prepared for the next election. Tanko made the remarks during a symposium in Onitsha, Anambra State, where he discussed the group’s strategies for success in the upcoming cycle.
Tanko, reflecting on Obi’s near victory in 2023, acknowledged that the Labour Party’s candidate was denied success due to alleged electoral malpractice. However, he reassured supporters that the Obidient Movement will learn from the past and make more robust preparations for 2027. The event, titled Repositioning the Obidient Movement for Greater Impact, was organized by the Obidient Movement and Anambra State Support Groups.
“Our goal is to foster good governance and accountability,” Tanko said. He further added, “Obi has the potential to become president in 2027, but we must organize ourselves more effectively. We will ensure that our agents are well-trained and thoroughly prepared for the elections.”
Tanko also addressed the criticisms faced by the movement in the 2023 election, particularly regarding claims that the Labour Party lacked a solid political structure. Despite these claims, Obi received significant support, but Tanko maintained that electoral malpractice hindered a fair outcome. “This time, we will ensure that history does not repeat itself,” he vowed.
The symposium also focused on the movement’s plans to advocate for electoral reform, highlighting the importance of legislative action and public mobilization. Tanko emphasized the movement’s commitment to pushing for fair electoral practices, both in the National Assembly and through public demonstrations.
Tanko concluded by stressing the need for justice, equity, and empowerment of Nigerian youths. He noted that even within the Northern regions, there was dissatisfaction with the current government. “We will make sure that Nigerians have a say in their future, and we will fight for a leadership that truly represents the will of the people,” he added.
