Nigerians in Lagos, Abuja, and other major cities have been thrown into darkness as the national electricity grid collapses again.
The nationwide outage occurred in the afternoon, leaving power consumers across the country in total darkness
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed this in a statement on Monday, December 11, 2023.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), responsible for the transmission of electricity across the country, officially confirmed the collapse of the national grid. The statement issued by TCN acknowledged the widespread outage and assured the public that efforts were underway to restore power to affected areas. However, the incident has once again brought to the forefront the systemic issues that continue to plague Nigeria’s power sector.
Lagos, the economic hub, and Abuja, the political capital, bore the brunt of the power outage. Businesses, households, and essential services were disrupted, with citizens left in the lurch without electricity. The recurrence of such incidents not only inconveniences the population but also hampers economic activities, further highlighting the urgent need for a robust and sustainable power infrastructure.
The collapse of the national electricity grid sheds light on the deep-seated challenges that have hindered the development of Nigeria’s power sector. Issues such as inadequate infrastructure, outdated equipment, lack of regular maintenance, and insufficient investment have contributed to the sector’s persistent vulnerabilities. These challenges not only affect the reliability of power supply but also hinder the country’s economic growth and development.
As citizens express frustration over the recurring power outages, there is a growing demand for accountability and decisive action from the government. The authorities must address the root causes of the systemic issues in the power sector and implement long-term solutions. Transparency in communication and a clear roadmap for improving the power infrastructure are essential to rebuilding public trust.
Nigeria’s economic landscape is intricately tied to the stability of its power supply. Industries, businesses, and small enterprises all depend on a consistent and reliable source of electricity to function efficiently. The recurrent collapse of the national electricity grid not only disrupts daily life but also takes a toll on economic activities, hindering the nation’s progress and potential for growth.

According to the statement signed by Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s spokesperson, the restoration of the national power grid is already ongoing.
Although Mbah said that power supply has already been restored in Abuja and a few other areas, it was confirmed that the capital city is still in darkness as of the time of writing this report.
Today’s seizure marked the second collapse since mid-September, when distribution firms nationwide reported the unavailability of bulk electricity from federal infrastructure.
This comes days after the minister of power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the ministry will collaborate with state governments to address the challenges in the power sector and boost supply.
