Nigerian president, Bola Tinubu, has reacted to the outcome of the Liberian presidential election.

Tinubu Extends Congratulations and Commends Weah's Sportsmanship

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the government and people of Liberia following the successful conduct of the presidential election.

The President, who spoke through his media aide, Ajuri Ngelale, on Saturday morning, congratulated the President-elect, Joseph Boakai.

President Tinubu’s message, delivered on a Saturday morning, reflects not only the significance of Liberia’s political landscape but also the commitment to fostering strong regional ties and promoting democratic ideals. The congratulatory statement highlights the maturity and dedication of the Liberian electorate, emphasizing the importance of free and fair elections in shaping the destiny of nations.

At the core of President Tinubu’s message is a warm and well-deserved congratulations to President-elect Joseph Boakai. Recognizing the challenges and responsibilities that come with leading a nation, President Tinubu commended Boakai for his commitment to public service and his successful journey to the presidency. This gesture reinforces the importance of fostering cooperation and solidarity among African nations, celebrating each other’s successes in the pursuit of democratic governance.

President Tinubu’s message goes beyond mere congratulations; it extends to the commendation of former President George Weah for his display of sportsmanship by conceding defeat. Weah’s willingness to accept the outcome of the election gracefully is a testament to the strength of Liberia’s democratic institutions and the maturity of its political leaders. Tinubu’s commendation underlines the significance of respecting electoral outcomes, a fundamental aspect of a thriving democracy.

He enjoined Boakai to unite the country and build on the popular support expressed through the ballot box to deliver good governance to the people of Liberia.

He also lauded the outgoing president, George Weah, for demonstrating uncommon leadership by conceding the election and averting any form of socio-political crisis.

He said Weah’s great act of democratic sportsmanship is exemplary, particularly at this time in West Africa, when democracy is under attack by malign actors who are bent on subverting the will of the people.

“I commend President George Weah for his sterling example, undiluted patriotism, and statesmanship. He has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa. He has demonstrated that the outcome of elections in the sub-region need not become the propellant of violence and unrest and that the will of the people must always be respected,” Tinubu said.

He equally thanked the people of Liberia for peacefully exercising their rights and implored them to remain steadfast in the furtherance of peace and democracy.
