Senator Sunday Karimi, Chairman of the Senate Services Committee from APC, Kogi West, has announced plans by the National Assembly to transfer the responsibility of conducting local council elections from state electoral bodies to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking to journalists in Abuja yesterday, Senator Karimi discussed the recent Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local government areas. He praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting this judgment and expressed confidence that the National Assembly would ensure state governments comply, while also preparing to amend the constitution to address contentious issues.
Senator Karimi emphasized the importance of honoring President Tinubu for enabling judicial independence, which led to this landmark decision. He credited Tinubu for restoring local government autonomy, which had been neglected since 1999, noting that effective local governance could greatly benefit Nigerian citizens.
Looking ahead, Senator Karimi acknowledged potential challenges from some state governors but stressed Tinubu’s commitment to judicial integrity and his dedication to the people’s welfare. He highlighted Tinubu’s understanding of grassroots issues, drawn from his experience as a former senator and governor.
Regarding future steps, Senator Karimi outlined the need for INEC to oversee local government elections by amending relevant laws. He emphasized the importance of electing capable leaders who can manage funds effectively and prioritize community development, ensuring that local governments serve their intended purpose.
Senator Karimi also addressed past financial mismanagement in local governments, where funds were often mishandled through joint state accounts. He expressed optimism that Tinubu’s efforts would be remembered as a significant achievement, setting the stage for potential reelection in 2027.
