Lagos Government's Bold Move Against Noise Pollution

They were sealed on Wednesday for not only noise pollution but also for other environmental violations

The Lagos State government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, has taken action against noise pollution by sealing a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Ifelodun Mosque, and various other churches and worship centers in the state.

Noise pollution has been an enduring challenge in urban areas, impacting the physical and mental well-being of residents. Lagos, being a bustling metropolis and economic hub, has grappled with escalating noise levels from various sources, including religious institutions and hospitality establishments. Recognizing the severity of this issue, the Lagos State government has initiated a crackdown on noise pollution, targeting specific venues that contribute significantly to the problem.

The sealing of churches, mosques, and hotels represents a proactive stance by the Lagos State government in curbing noise pollution. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration is sending a clear message that the well-being and comfort of residents are paramount, and steps will be taken to ensure harmonious coexistence in the city. The move aligns with broader efforts to create a sustainable and livable environment in Lagos.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced this on Thursday via his social media handle.

While the government’s move has been met with support from residents who have long endured the negative impacts of noise pollution, it also prompts a necessary conversation about the delicate balance between religious freedom and public nuisance. Striking a balance between these two aspects requires a nuanced approach that respects the rights of religious institutions while ensuring the overall well-being of the community.

He stated that these worship centers were sealed on Wednesday for not only noise pollution but also for other environmental violations.

Additionally, the Commissioner mentioned other facilities sealed by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), which include Avro Supermarket, hotels, Euphoria Night Club, Lady B Gold Bar, and Mainland Leisure View Hotel, among others.

Wahab said that “Ifelodun Mosque, Children of God Healings Deliverance and Adoration Ministry, City of Testimony Church, Cherubim & Seraphim (Ayo ni), Station of Relief Christ Ministry, Redeemed Christian Church of God (Sanctuary of Favour), Euphoria Night Club, Mainland Leisure View Hotel, House 46 Hotel and Suites, Selino Hotel, Lady B Gold Bar, Da-Villa Hotel, Perch Hotel & Suites, and Avro Supermarket were yesterday sealed by the LASEPA official enforcement team over noise pollution and other environmental infractions.”

On October 10 the Lagos State government sealed churches, event centres and other establishments in the Lagos Island, Ojudu, Ogba, Magodo, and Ikosi areas of the state over alleged noise pollution.
