The Lagos State Police Command has initiated an orderly room trial for four officers following their involvement in an incident of assault captured in a viral video. This was confirmed by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, in a statement released on Wednesday.
According to Hundeyin, Commissioner of Police Adegoke Fayoade directed the immediate trial of the officers seen assaulting a suspect who allegedly resisted arrest. The trial process is the initial investigative step within the police force, with the outcome subject to enforcement by appropriate authority.
In addition to addressing the officers’ conduct, the statement highlighted the arrest of 27 civilians for allegedly assaulting police officers engaged in lawful duties, including an incident involving a traditional ruler.
Hundeyin further detailed an operation by the Alausa Police Division responding to reports of drug abuse on Makinde Odewale Street, Oregun, Ikeja. The operation encountered resistance, resulting in severe injury to an Inspector who was hospitalized after being attacked with a broken bottle. The suspects involved also assaulted the Olu of Alausa and the CDA Chairman.
Despite challenges faced during the operation, including unprofessional conduct among some officers, a reinforcement team successfully arrested suspects allegedly in possession of illicit substances.
CP Fayoade unequivocally denounced the actions of both officers and civilians involved, emphasizing that such behavior contradicts the values and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force. He warned of strict consequences for anyone found culpable in assaulting police officers.
The statement concluded with assurance from the command of its commitment to upholding law and order, preventing crime, and ensuring the prosecution of offenders in accordance with the law.
