In a significant move, 180 members of the minority caucus in the House of Representatives have officially backed a call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The caucus, which includes representatives from the PDP, LP, NNPP, APGA, SDP, YPP, and ADC, endorsed the motion during a session dinner on Monday in Abuja. The call was led by Obi Aguocha (LP-Abia), who represents the Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South federal constituencies in Abia.
Aguocha delivered a fervent appeal for his colleagues to support efforts aimed at securing Kanu’s release. He emphasized that addressing the situation politically could foster national peace, stability, and unity.
The minority caucus leader highlighted the necessity of a united approach in resolving Kanu’s case and advocated for dialogue and reconciliation as opposed to prolonged legal battles and confrontations. Aguocha stressed that a political solution could improve national integration and rebuild trust among different communities.
He further noted that the opposition parties are now taking a firm stance on several pressing issues, including Kanu’s release, planned protests, national security, deteriorating infrastructure, and economic challenges.
