The Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has directed the verification and biometric capturing of all local government workers in the state.
Onyia said the verification committee would be inaugurated on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the Government House, Enugu.
Those absent and others confirmed not to have been fulfilling the terms of their employment shall cease to be government employees.
The directive entails the establishment of a verification committee, tasked with scrutinizing the records of all local government employees. The verification committee is set to be inaugurated on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the Government House, Enugu. This committee will employ a meticulous process, including biometric capturing, to authenticate the identity and employment status of each worker.
Biometric verification has emerged as a crucial tool for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of employee records. By linking individual identities to unique biological traits such as fingerprints or facial features, the chances of fraudulent activities or discrepancies are significantly reduced. In the context of local government workers, biometric verification adds an extra layer of security to the personnel database, ensuring that only legitimate employees remain on the payroll.
One of the primary goals of this verification initiative is to streamline the local government workforce. Over time, organizational structures may experience distortions due to factors like turnover, retirements, or inadequate record-keeping. By conducting a thorough verification process, the government aims to rectify any inconsistencies in the workforce, ultimately fostering a more efficient and accountable public service.
The directive is clear in its consequences for those found absent or confirmed not to have been fulfilling the terms of their employment. Such individuals shall cease to be government employees. This measure underscores the commitment to maintaining a disciplined and responsible workforce, where employees are expected to adhere to the terms of their employment and actively contribute to the objectives of their respective roles.
Beyond the immediate implications for individual employees, the verification exercise aligns with broader goals of promoting fiscal responsibility. State resources must be allocated judiciously, and ensuring an accurate reflection of the workforce is fundamental to this endeavor. By identifying and addressing any discrepancies in the employment records, the state government is taking proactive steps to optimize resource allocation and enhance overall financial prudence.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s decision to communicate this directive through official channels and announce the inauguration of the verification committee at the Government House reflects a commitment to transparency. The public announcement underscores the openness of the process, instilling confidence among both the workforce and the general public regarding the government’s intentions and actions.
The order was contained in a statement signed by Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, on Thursday.
Onyia said the verification committee would be inaugurated on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the Government House, Enugu.
“The verification exercise shall commence on that same Friday, December 1, 2023, and continue till the end of February 2024 with random visits by the verification committee to any of the 17 local governments in the state on any working day of the week.
“Workers are expected to be on duty with their letters of appointment and schedule of duty for verification and biometric capturing. Those absent and others confirmed not to have been fulfilling the terms of their employment shall cease to be government employees.
“Also, all local governments by this announcement are hereby directed to henceforth submit their lists of attendance for the previous week on Wednesdays to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government via the email address: [email protected],” he stated.
