FG Calls for Comprehensive Relief Measures Beyond Wage Increases

FG Emphasizes Holistic Approach Beyond Wage Increases

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to reviewing the new minimum wage in a realistic and sustainable manner. Speaking at the opening of the 2024 Synod of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria in Abuja, he emphasized the need for a wage system that balances worker benefits with economic stability.

“As I have repeatedly stated, the FG supports increasing wages for Nigerian workers, but we advocate for a realistic and sustainable approach,” Minister Idris said. He highlighted concerns about potential economic repercussions such as mass layoffs and increased living costs affecting the welfare of over 200 million Nigerians.

Minister Idris emphasized that while wage increases are important, they are not the sole solution to alleviate hardships. “Nigerians deserve relief that goes beyond wage hikes,” he stated. “Efforts to reduce living expenses and increase disposable income are crucial.” He pointed to initiatives like the Presidential CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) initiative, which aims to significantly reduce transportation costs by as much as 50% through the use of CNG as an alternative to petrol.

In conclusion, Minister Idris urged labour to consider the broader implications of wage adjustments and collaborate on solutions that benefit all Nigerians while maintaining economic stability.
