Dabiri-Erewa emphasizes the importance of legitimate travel with appropriate documentation to avoid unfavorable consequences for Nigerians seeking asylum
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), cautions Nigerians against migrating to Canada without proper documentation. The warning comes amid increasing challenges faced by individuals seeking asylum due to improper travel procedures.
Canada has been a beacon of hope for individuals seeking a fresh start and improved opportunities. The country’s inclusive policies and strong economy make it an attractive option for many. However, the surge in the number of Nigerians seeking asylum in Canada has raised concerns, prompting Dabiri-Erewa to address the issue.
The Chairman highlights the increasing challenges faced by asylum seekers who arrive in Canada without the proper documentation. The dream of a better life can quickly turn into a nightmare when migrants find themselves navigating legal complexities and facing potential consequences due to improper travel procedures.
Dabiri-Erewa underscores the significance of legitimate travel with appropriate documentation. The process of migrating to Canada is not one to be taken lightly, and adherence to legal procedures is crucial. The warning serves as a reminder that shortcuts or attempts to bypass immigration regulations can lead to unfavorable outcomes for those seeking asylum.
Migration is a complex process that involves careful planning and adherence to legal requirements. Asylum seekers, especially those without proper documentation, face numerous challenges upon reaching their destination. These challenges may include legal complications, prolonged processing times, and the risk of deportation.
Dabiri-Erewa emphasizes that Nigerians should be aware of the potential pitfalls and consequences associated with improper migration. While the desire for a better life is understandable, it should not overshadow the importance of following the established procedures for immigration.
During Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s visit to a shelter in Brampton, Canada, Dabiri-Erewa expressed empathy for Nigerians residing there and underscored the importance of legitimate travel with appropriate documentation to avert unfavourable consequences.
The spokesperson of NIDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, conveyed the chairman’s message in a statement on Thursday. Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the growing difficulty faced by those without proper documentation in several countries and urged prospective travellers to reconsider their plans.
“It is just not worth it, more often than not,” she cautioned.
The statement revealed that Vivian Eruka, associated with the Bethel Food Bank and actively engaged with shelter residents, shared that the Mayor of Brampton had committed to providing an additional 800 beds and shelters for asylum seekers.
Mr. Wale Rabiu, the owner of Matlock Bakery, contributed to the cause by donating hundreds of loaves of bread to the shelter inmates, highlighting the communal effort to support those in need.
In a subsequent phone conversation with the Daily Trust, NIDCOM’s spokesperson clarified that Dabiri-Erewa visited one asylum shelter in Canada, emphasizing the presence of numerous such shelters scattered across the country. The warning from the federal government underscores the necessity for Nigerians to adhere to proper immigration procedures when considering relocation to Canada.
