The power minister, Adebayo Adelabu, announced that the federal government plans to establish a committee to address power blackouts in specific regions.
The backdrop of ongoing power supply challenges necessitates a comprehensive approach to identify root causes and implement effective solutions. Minister Adelabu’s discussions with distribution companies underscore the collaborative efforts required between the public and private sectors. By visiting key facilities, the minister demonstrated a commitment to understanding the intricacies of the challenges faced, ensuring a well-informed and targeted response.
Addressing power supply disruptions demands a coordinated and systematic effort. Establishing a committee serves as a strategic move to consolidate expertise, streamline decision-making processes, and ensure accountability. The committee will play a pivotal role in conducting a thorough assessment of the issues, devising actionable plans, and overseeing the implementation of solutions. This approach aligns with best practices for tackling complex challenges in the energy sector.
This statement was issued via his official X account following a meeting with electricity distribution and generation companies held on Friday in Abuja.
To enhance the committee’s efficacy, careful consideration should be given to its composition. A multidisciplinary team comprising experts in power distribution, infrastructure, technology, and regulatory frameworks would be essential. Additionally, representatives from affected regions, consumer advocacy groups, and relevant governmental bodies should be included to ensure a well-rounded perspective. This diverse composition will facilitate a holistic understanding of the challenges and foster collaborative problem-solving.
“I have decided to form a committee involving all stakeholders. Together, we will work on recommendations to resolve these issues and ensure a more reliable and consistent power supply for our citizens,” said Mr. Adelabu.
The minister said he discussed with distribution companies on Thursday how to address blackouts in some parts of the country. He said he had also visited facilities in Olorunsogo, Ogun State, and Omotosho in Ondo to better understand the challenge.
“Power supply during the yuletide improved, but unfortunately, we have experienced setbacks in the New Year.
“After investigations, it is clear that the main cause of poor power supply is the low supply of gas to GenCos,‘’ he said.
The minister said resolving the gas supply issue was a top priority in the Ministry of Power agenda.
Mr Adelabu said a plan had also been established to initiate discussions with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources regarding collaboration and to emphasise the importance of prioritising gas to power.
He said that during the meeting, indebtedness to GenCos by Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET) was also addressed.
“While acknowledging the sector’s liquidity challenge, we are working on validating the debt and determining a fair resolution.
“I emphasised the importance of GenCos establishing contractual arrangements with gas suppliers to ensure a steady gas supply.
“Recognising concessions may be needed, I assure you that we are committed to working on this to stabilise the power sector. To tackle the gas supply and liquidity challenges,” he said.
Mr Adelabu said the ministry’s commitment to addressing challenges affecting power supply was unwavering.
“Your patience is appreciated as we work collaboratively towards a brighter, more reliable energy future for Nigeria,‘’ he added.
The Federal Government’s decision to establish a committee dedicated to addressing power supply disruptions marks a significant step toward finding lasting solutions to a long-standing issue. By fostering collaboration, leveraging expertise, and ensuring transparency, this committee has the potential to bring about positive change in the nation’s energy landscape. As the government commits to resolving these challenges, it signals a renewed focus on providing a reliable and uninterrupted power supply for the benefit of all citizens.
