The Federal Government has strongly criticized recent media reports alleging that the SAMOA Agreement signed with the European Union (EU) includes provisions promoting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) rights. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, addressing journalists at the National Press Centre in Abuja, expressed dismay over what he termed as irresponsible and sensational reporting.
Idris singled out a national newspaper for perpetuating what he described as baseless claims, stating, “The allegations of LGBTQ promotion in the SAMOA Agreement are completely unfounded and misleading. The government categorically denies any such provisions in the agreement.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining civility and respecting freedom of the press while condemning what he termed as reckless reporting that could jeopardize national security and stability.
In response to the allegations, the Ministry of Budget and National Planning clarified that the SAMOA Agreement aims to foster sustainable development, combat climate change, and enhance investment opportunities among member states of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) in collaboration with the EU. The agreement, signed by all 27 EU member states and a majority of OACPS members, excludes any provisions related to LGBTQ issues.
The Ministry further underscored the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and the OACPS, highlighting significant developmental projects funded through previous agreements with the EU. It urged the public to consult relevant government agencies for accurate information on the comprehensive provisions of the SAMOA Agreement and its implications for Nigeria’s development.
The Federal Government announced its intention to formally lodge complaints against misleading media reports and pursue legal action to address what it termed as malicious misinformation intended to disrupt national harmony and security.
