As protests against economic hardship loom, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Benneth Igweh, has appealed to Abuja residents to refrain from participating. His call aims to protect the city’s newly developed infrastructure, which he emphasizes is crucial for the area’s progress.
During a press conference, CP Igweh expressed concern about potential damage to public assets, urging residents to respect the recent improvements spearheaded by both the FCT administration and President Bola Tinubu. “We have invested significant effort and resources into securing the FCT,” he stated. “We’ve even traveled to neighboring states to address threats to our peace, and we’ve lost officers in the process.”
CP Igweh stressed that engaging in protests could undermine these efforts, particularly if outsiders exploit the situation to cause harm. “I urge you not to let protests lead to the destruction of what has been achieved. Please, act with maturity and appreciation for the safety measures we’ve worked hard to implement.”
In addition to addressing the potential protest, CP Igweh also announced a breakthrough in a major criminal case. He revealed the arrest of Alhaji Ashiru, the alleged mastermind behind the armed robbery and murder of retired Brigadier General Uwem Harold Udokwerre. Ashiru, who had a history of criminal activity and escaped from prison, was apprehended in Kano while attempting to flee the country. The police have recovered stolen items, including the general’s gun, wristwatch, and his wife’s jewelry.
The Commissioner also showcased other recent arrests, including a group involved in multiple robberies and kidnappings in Abuja. Ibrahim Yakubu, Ugumonde Joseph, and Moktab Lahi were apprehended with pistols and ammunition. They had been using a red vehicle to facilitate their crimes. Additionally, CP Igweh displayed a truck filled with stolen materials, such as cables and wires, intended for illegal sale.
“The truck was used to transport stolen goods, including cables and wires from government institutions,” he said. “Our intelligence led to their arrest, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to protect the city from criminal activities.”
CP Igweh concluded his address by thanking the residents and emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to maintain the safety and integrity of Abuja.
