A deadly conflict between rival militia groups in Benue State resulted in the death of a family of 7

A tragic incident unfolded in the Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State as violent clashes erupted between rival militia groups, resulting in significant casualties. The conflict, which erupted on Tuesday, saw at least 40 individuals feared dead, with victims including members of the warring factions and innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

Reports indicate that the violence escalated following the kidnapping and subsequent killing of hostages by a militia leader from Ukum, sparking outrage among rival gang members. In a retaliatory move, another militia leader allegedly joined forces with Fulani militia from Taraba, leading to a fierce confrontation in the Gbagir community.

The ensuing battle left over 30 individuals injured and several others reported missing, underscoring the widespread impact of the conflict on the local population. Tragically, among the victims were a family of seven from Tse Adzandeh Mbasaa, Mbajiga, Ityuluv, Torov, highlighting the devastating toll on innocent civilians.

Efforts to reach Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, the Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, for comment were unsuccessful. However, a military source attributed the attacks to local militiamen and affirmed the military’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the affected areas.

In response to the crisis, the state Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, confirmed the deployment of additional officers to the area and ongoing efforts to recover victims and maintain law and order amidst the turmoil. The situation remains fluid as authorities work to contain the violence and prevent further loss of life.
