Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello in EFCC Custody Over N80.2 Billion Fraud Allegations

EFCC Detains Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Over Alleged N80.2 Billion Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally detained former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in connection with an alleged N80.2 billion fraud.

Bello presented himself at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday after months of avoiding multiple summons. His detention was confirmed by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.

“It is true that we have him in our custody. The operatives of the Commission arrested him,” Oyewale stated during a briefing with journalists.

The former governor reportedly arrived at the EFCC office with his legal team to address allegations of misappropriation of public funds during his tenure. However, Governor Usman Ododo, Bello’s successor, who had accompanied him to the EFCC office during a previous visit, was not part of his entourage this time.

In April 2024, the EFCC had declared Bello wanted over charges related to money laundering involving N80.2 billion. His detention marks a significant step in the Commission’s investigation into the alleged financial misconduct.
