The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a strong warning against calls for a military takeover in Nigeria, labeling such actions as treasonous under the nation’s Constitution.
In a statement released by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, the military reaffirmed its unwavering loyalty to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and its dedication to protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities, including defending the country’s territorial integrity and maintaining peace and security,” Brigadier General Gusau stated. He also emphasized that any call for a military coup, such as the one circulated in a recent viral video, is illegal and treasonable.
The DHQ underscored that the current peace and stability in the country can be attributed to the military’s dedication, as well as the continuous support provided by President Tinubu’s administration. Gusau assured Nigerians that the military, in conjunction with other security agencies, will take all necessary steps to safeguard the democratic system and prevent any unconstitutional actions.
“The AFN, along with other relevant security agencies, has been tasked with taking appropriate measures to address anyone promoting or participating in activities that threaten the country’s democracy,” Gusau added.
The Chief of Defence Staff expressed gratitude for the public’s ongoing support and prayers, assuring citizens that the military is resolute in defending democracy and that any attempts to disrupt the constitutional order will be met with firm resistance.
